With a growing number of clinical studies supporting the use of medical marijuana to address a wide variety of symptoms and conditions, it’s no surprise that nearly 1,000,000 Floridians have successfully signed up to receive a medical marijuana card. There’s truly never been a better time to apply for your own medical cannabis card.

The process doesn’t need to be protracted or frustrating, either. That’s the idea behind Sun Jane, a team of physicians, caregivers, and MMJ professionals dedicated to helping Floridians obtain access to safe, effective, and sustainable medical cannabis. Here’s how to get a medical marijuana card in Florida. (Spoiler alert: It’s easier than you think!)

Your Medical Marijuana Card: Florida Cannabis Regulations

For starters, let’s define the terms around medical cannabis. Under Florida law, a person applying for a medical marijuana card must be a permanent or seasonal resident of the state and be diagnosed with one or more of Florida’s Qualifying Conditions for medical marijuana by a certified physician.

While there are no age limits, those under the age of 18 must be diagnosed by two physicians and obtain written consent from their legal guardian. In addition, those patients may not smoke cannabis unless they’ve been diagnosed with a terminal condition (cannabis medicine is available in many alternate formats, including oral solutions, tablets, and more).

If you’re not a patient yourself but would like to become a registered caregiver for one, you can apply for a Medical Marijuana Caregiver ID Card. If your application is accepted, you’ll be permitted to order, purchase, and transport medical marijuana on a patient’s behalf.

On a technical note, caregivers must be 21 or older and complete a caregiver certification course every two years. If not a close relative of the patient, they must also pass a background screening.

Getting Your Medical Marijuana Card in Florida: 4 Easy Steps

Let’s face it: Navigating many application processes—whether in person or online—can be challenging.

Those applying for a Florida medical marijuana card must complete the registration application. This includes finding a qualified and reputable medical cannabis doctor, being evaluated in-person, uploading all required documents, providing proof of residency, a current photograph, and other technical requirements. In addition, there’s an annual fee for cardholders of $75.

We’d like to suggest an easier way. Sun Jane offers a simple, user-friendly, and fast alternative. Here’s how it works:

  1. Create a Patient Profile

Start by filling out our simple Signup Form. All that’s required here is just your name, date of birth, phone number, email, and location. Once you’ve completed your profile, you'll be given a HIPAA-compliant pre-screening questionnaire so that our MMJ professionals can best assess your condition or conditions.

  1. Make an Appointment

Sun Jane has a team of qualified, compassionate cannabis doctors who are ready to help and are located all throughout Florida. We'll provide you with scheduling options based on your location and preferences—you can even select a doctor based on their profile and who’s conveniently located near you.

  1. Obtain Medical Marijuana Card Approval

Now it’s time to go meet your doctor! Just follow the instructions in your confirmation email to arrive at your in-person consultation on time. The entire consultation typically takes less than 20 minutes, and most patients with qualifying conditions obtain same-day approval.

Your provider will submit the necessary documents to the state’s Office of  Medical Marijuana Use (OMMU). Once they do, you’ll receive a login to your patient portal there. You’ll use the portal to pay the $75 card registration fee paid directly to the state. Once you’ve done so, you'll have same-day access (typically in fewer than four hours) to medical marijuana through a digital card! Your physical card will arrive in 7 - 10 business days, so keep an eye out for it!
